What is The 1014?
Aside from being New Zealand’s original sports news app and the centre of the universe for the Kiwi sports fanatic The 1014 is a platform helping to break down the traditional barriers to entry into the super competitive world of sports journalism.
The team at The 1014 pride themselves on providing the latest breaking sports news as well as exceptional original pieces, viral sporting content from around the globe, videos, and more. On top of this, there is an ethos borne out of respect where the story will be reported as-is and the sensationalism that has plagued the sporting landscape for far too long will be put firmly on the back-burner.
Why join the team? What’s in it for you?
Essentially the world of sports journalism is incredibly competitive and very, very difficult to break into. The barriers to entry are high, and even after all the graft and sacrifice, there is no guarantee that you will get your articles published.
The team at The 1014 believe in meritocracy above all else. To take an old sporting adage “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough”, and adapt it to the world of sports journalism; “if the article is good enough, it will be published”. To this end, if you have a great on-topic story or an ability to articulate acute analysis that will promote debate you should send us through your work. Experience counts for a lot in the traditional world but we will happily break down that barrier and publish quality content, who knows, you might have a viral article just waiting to burst out.
To help increase the speed to market and the quality of content we have put together a Playbook, which can be found here. The 1014 Playbook provides a lot of useful insights into creating content for the new media landscape. If you are interested in providing content then please read The Playbook, it covers what The 1014 is looking for, and more importantly, how to go about producing quality, shareable content for a mobile world.
Writers who continually submit work of a high, desirable quality will be considered for auto-publishing rights while full-time employment at The 1014 is a very real possibility as we begin to expand. There will be roles in various fields.
If you’d like to get published on The 1014, become part of a team that is going to change New Zealand’s sports journalism landscape, and have the satisfaction of generating debate about the sports you love then fill out the application form at the bottom of the page and we will get back to you ASAP.
Before submitting there are a few things to consider:
- First and foremost, the article must be yours, and yours alone. We will not tolerate plagarism. Furthermore, it must not only be yours, it must not be published anywhere else
- Your article needs to be between 350 and 500 words
- It needs to address a relevant, current topic on the date it is submitted
- And it can not be a generic match report (or similar). We are looking for the x-factor and so is the New Zealand public
